“There are two options in life: To fight or to hide”…
Or would it be to laugh or to cry?
Or would it be to laugh or to cry?
From his secret hiding place in the attic, Lizardboy (Hector Fernando), the ‘trouble-making’ rascal from the ‘barrio’, innocently unravels the story of his ‘up-side-down’ family from the emerging Colombian middle class of the early 1980’s. His physical and exhilarating tale, at times humorous, and at times heartbreaking, takes the audience on a rollercoaster trip to the origins of violence.
Lizardboy, an authenticcomedic drama, shines the spotlight on more than a dozen colorful and contradictory characters all portrayed by award winning actor, co-director and playwright Víctor Gómez. Through these characters, he x-rays the life of a country in the middle of a social landslide, all seen through the eyes of a mischievous nine-year-old boy, who only finds freedom when he fights, climbs walls, talks tirelessly, and creates adventures out of chaos.
Two-time winner of the De Colores Festival of New Works Development Grant, this one-man-show was a successful work in progress at the Obsidian International Playwrights Forum. It was also presented as a work-in-progress for the Allende Arts Festival in Toronto, and in public readings by Alameda Theatre, under the direction of Marilo Nunez and Ruth Madoc Jones. This reading featured Paula Rivera and Carlos Diaz. Lizardboy was recently selected by Play Wrights Canada Press for publication in 2012, as part of their Canadian Anthology of Latin American/ Canadian Theatre.
This play has been developed with the dramaturgical support of Sheena D. Robertson, Stephen Colella, Dramaturge at Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People, and Erica Kopyto, Dramaturge for Nightwood Theatre.
